First Birthday

We just celebrated our son's first birthday and it was beautiful! The guest list included my husband's mom, his brother and wife, and an old friend of ours. We had met with a lot of skepticism from family and friends alike when we revealed our plans for Sid's first birthday. Most people either categorized us as boring, miserly or snobbish. We did have our moments of doubt in the days leading up to the event, but on that day, watching Sid enjoy himself in the security and comfort of familiar surroundings and people cleared it all away. He was in his element throughout!
So if anyone is contemplating something similar for a first birthday, here are a few tips:

  • Keep the party short, and start after your baby's nap (ensure she has eaten before naptime) so you get a happy, well-fed and rested baby in the party. And that translates to happy parents, and of course, great pictures!
  • Go creative with the decorations. Trust me, even one year olds notice them and can intuit that its all about them!
  • The gifts (and I am guessing its all going to be bought by you!) can have their own corner where your LO heads straight after cutting his cake. (We changed our minds about wrapping his presents as the boxes were so attractive on their own.)
  • Keep the camera ready for those moments that will surely come. And DO NOT miss a video of the cake cutting ceremony.
  • Food- keep it basic and try to include things that your LO can dig into as well. Remember it is her big day so you don't want to have to say "no"!
  • Enjoy the mess! It isn't everyday that your LO gets to do as he pleases.
And if your plans are met with unkind remarks, take them in your stride. The thing to remember is, you may be displeasing a lot of people here, but your LO turns one only once. So have it your way and believe me, your baby will love the exclusive attention from mommy and daddy. And after all, isn't that what birthdays are supposed to be?
